Rise Up: Women’s Rights: August – December 2013

Four neighbourhoods. 26 organizers. 200 volunteers. 10,176 women out to vote.

We ran our third campaign and our first campaign in Delhi to support women to participate in the democratic process. Our team of 26 organizers, mostly college students, went into their communities in Malviya Nagar, Model Town, Karol Bagh, and Kasturba Nagar and talked to women, found out the issues that mattered to them, set up meetings with the community and their local elected officials, and went to the polls together for the Delhi State Assembly Elections.

By widening access to the political system, our organizers heard from women who normally didn’t feel represented by their officials – and helped them realize how to build their power, together. Our neighbourhood teams met with each other and came up with key points for change that they wanted to make their communities better – and then told their MLA candidates about them. These events were attended by over 25 women and their male allies!

On Election Day, we found a considerable increase in how many of these women voted. They found that alone, they were a whisper – but together, their demands made a roar. It was in their hands to change Delhi politics.

But they didn’t stop there – these teams are still working as the backbone of our campaign for Women’s Safety in Delhi, finding community leaders and hosting local events to reclaim Delhi’s streets and public spaces as safe spots for all women.
